Scottish Police Memorial

Remembering Scottish police officers who died in the line of duty.

The Scottish Police Memorial was unveiled by HRH the Princess Royal on 7 September 2004.
It carries the names of all Scottish police officers known to have died in the line of duty since 1800.

Princess Anne unveiled the memorial and laid the first wreath at a ceremony at the Scottish Police College, Tulliallan in Fife, in the presence of invited guests including many relatives of almost two hundred police officers whose names are engraved on the memorial.

Scottish Memorial

The memorial was built by the Scottish Police Memorial Trust, a Scottish Charity, in association with all Scottish Police Forces and Police Staff Associations.

The Inscriptions read:

"We owe them a debt we can never repay"

"We will ensure they are never forgotten"

The Scottish Police Memorial Trust was founded in January 2003 by retired Strathclyde officer, Jim McNulty. At the time Jim was a trustee and vice-chairman of the Police Roll of Honour Trust, which was of assistance in the setting up of the new charity by providing the names of all Scottish officers killed on duty, uncovered after many years research co-ordinated by its chairman, Anthony Rae.

More in depth research was carried out by our trustee, Joe Craig, also a retired Strathclyde officer, on our behalf, for the National Police Officers Roll of Honour and this too was supplied to the Scottish Police Memorial Trust and Scottish Federation. Joe was an invited guest, representing the Police Roll of Honour Trust, at the unveiling ceremony.

Scottish Police Memorial Trust chairman, Jim McNulty, said: "The Scottish Police Memorial Trust wish to thank the Police Roll of Honour Trust for the constant assistance they provided in researching and compiling the names that appear on the memorial. Both Tony Rae and Joe Craig worked hard in the face of deadlines to ensure that we had all the required information. These names are the most important part of the memorial, and the trust, and the Scottish survivors, greatly appreciate that help."

We are happy that our assistance has now enabled the Scottish Memorial, and accompanying Book of Remembrance, to be completed in a timely fashion as a worthy tribute to those whose names are recorded thereon and whose sacrifice in the public service will now never be forgotten.

Jim McNulty

Jim died on Friday 1st October 2004 after a long fight against leukaemia.
Jim was Vice-Chairman of the Police Roll of Honour Trust before leaving to found the Scottish Police Memorial Trust and UK Care of Police Survivors (COPS) charities. He was well known internationally in this field of voluntary work and he will be missed by a great many people both here and abroad.
Jim did not lose his fight against the disease, he won it,
he achieved his dreams that are the Scottish Police Memorial and UK-COPS,
they are his legacy.
