May 1680 Isaack Smith Watchman, Night Watch, London Struck with his own staff and fatally injured while stopping an unruly gang. 29 May 1680 Robert Teagle Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally stabbed with a sword attempting to arrest a man for causing damage. 28 August 1684 Thomas Small Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally bludgeoned with his own staff by a man he had warned about his conduct. 13 May 1687 1690 John Pascall Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally wounded when struck in the eye with a sword by a man he had stopped. 20 January 1690 Thomas Lashly Watchman, Night Watch, London Bludgeoned to death while attempting to quell a disturbance in the street. 30 May 1691 Will Vernish Watchman, Night Watch, London Died after being beaten and kicked on the ground during a street disturbance. 25 May 1692 Thomas Smith Constable, Bloomsbury, London Fatally shot when, despite threats, he attempted to arrest an armed burglar. 3 April 1694 1700 John Cooper Constable, Mayfair, London Fatally stabbed with a sword whilst dispersing a disorderly crowd at the fair. 12 May 1702 Thomas Trevis Watchman, Night Watch, London Stabbed to death with a sword while assisting a Constable with a prisoner. 11 February 1704 John Dent Constable, Covent Garden, London Fatally stabbed when attacked by a crowd attempting to free a prisoner. 8 March 1709 1720 Peter Parry Watchman, Night Watch, London Stabbed to death with a sword while dealing with a street affray. 29 May 1720 Joseph Candy Watchman, Night Watch, London Bludgeoned to death in an altercation with another watchman found drunk on duty. 26 December 1724 1730 Samuel Alexander Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally bludgeoned while assisting a constable after disturbing smugglers. 17 May 1733 Charles Dubois Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally stabbed with a bayonet by a soldier he had stopped for questioning. 20 January 1737 1740 Isaac Crawley Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally shot assisting a constable by some horsemen they encountered in the night. 4 April 1742 William Diggle Constable, Aldersgate, London Fatally assaulted by a drunken man whose wife had asked for protection. 2 July 1744 1750 Mr. Hind Officer, Bow Street Office, London Fatally wounded attempting to arrest two armed men for highway robbery. January 1755 William Atkinson Officer, Newcastle upon Tyne Struck on the head with an axe when trying to execute an arrest warrant. June 1756 1760 William Ridley Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally bludgeoned with his own staff confronting a group of drunken men. 10 December 1767 John Bigby Watchman, Night Watch, London Struck with a poker and killed when intervening in a drunken brawl. 24 December 1769 1770 John Atwood Runner, Clerkenwell Bridewell, London Fatally beaten and kicked attempting to arrest an escaped prisoner. May 1771 Philip Moss Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally wounded when a mob attacked the Watch-House to free a prisoner. 3 February 1775 Thomas Grimsley Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally wounded while attempting to arrest a suspect armed with an axe. 11 March 1776 William Barnet Officer, Bow Street Office, London Fatally stabbed by a woman while trying to execute an arrest warrant. 31 July 1779 1780 Edward Cox Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally bludgeoned with his own staff by a drunken man who accosted him. 14 January 1781 George Linnel Constable, Pattishall, Northamptonshire Shot dead when, despite threats, he tried to execute an arrest warrant. 23 July 1788 John Parry Peace Officer, Chester Killed attempting to execute a warrant on a man for assaulting his wife. December 1788 John Wilkinson Officer, East Smithfield, London Fatally stabbed attempting to arrest a drunken man for causing a disturbance. 16 July 1789 James Bonner Watchman, Night Watch, London Fatally bludgeoned and stabbed while attempting to arrest three burglars. 25 August 1789 1790 David Price Constable, Southwark Police Office Fatally shot attempting to arrest a man wanted for highway robbery. 13 January 1795 Thomas Price Watchman, Night Watch, London Shot dead when he approached an armed man causing a disturbance. 4 February 1795 Gabriel Franks Officer, Marine Police Office, Wapping Fatally shot when the new Marine Police Office was attacked by a riotous mob. 16 October 1798 Duncan Grant Officer, Bow Street Patrol, London Fatally wounded when attacked by a mob during a raid on a public house. 26 December 1798 George Ball Constable, Nottingham Shot dead while attempting to arrest an armed man who escaped from custody. 16 August 1800 For the Fallen ~ Lest we Forget |
