Constabulary Died 20 November 2009,
aged 44
|
|
|
At
night during severe weather and flooding across the
county, the officer was directing motorists to safety
off Northside Bridge, Workington, which was in a dangerous
condition, when the bridge was destroyed by the flood
and he was swept away and killed, his body found on
a beach at Allonby that afternoon.
Bill
had completed 25 years police service and was a traffic
officer attached to the Roads Policing Unit based at
Workington; he had won a number of awards during his
service. He is survived by his wife, two sons
aged 16 and 13 and two daughters aged 15 and 6 years.
His
name has been entered on the Roll of Honour at the National Police
Memorial.

Stuart McLay
Police Sergeant Metropolitan
Police Died 2 November 2009,
aged 42
|
|
|
Fatally
injured while travelling to report for duty in the early
morning when his motorcyle was involved in a road
traffic collision at Lewisham.
Iain
was appointed in February 1986 and was attached
to the Specialist Crime Directorate Intelligence Bureau
having previously served with the Territorial Support
Group. He is survived by his wife and daughter aged
22 months; his parents and brother.

James Johnson
Police Constable Wiltshire
Police Died 3 August 2009,
aged 46
|
|
|
When
reporting for duty at Westbury Police Station, after
jogging to work from his home, he collapsed in the station
and despite
attempts to resuscitate him he died soon afterwards
from heart failure.
Mike was appointed
in 1987 and worked at Westbury as a Neighbourhood Beat
Manager; he had previous service as a Firearms
Officer and had been commended for bravery. He
is survived by his daughter aged 18 and son 13, his
fiancée and her three daughters aged 20, 16 and
11; his parents and a brother and sister.

Phillip
Edward Pratt
Police Constable Kent
Police Died 14 June 2009,
aged 26
|
|
|
Fatally
injured when he was struck by a vehicle whilst setting
up diversions to protect the scene of an earlier road
traffic accident during the early morning on the A249
dual carriageway near Sittingbourne.
Phillip
joined Kent Police in January 2005, after previous
service in force communications and as a special constable;
he was a response officer stationed at Sittingbourne. He
is survived by his parents and his sister and his fiancée
and her two sons aged 14 and 10 years.

Officer Avon
and Somerset Constabulary Died 28 April 2009,
aged 59
|
|
|
Whilst assisting
at a road traffic collision during the evening near Woolverton,
he was placing warning signs when
he collapsed and died from heart failure.
Dave had worked
for the Constabulary for 20 years having been a Traffic
Warden for 15 years before his appointment as a PCSO based
at Frome. He
is survived by his wife, adult daughter and two adult sons; his
father, two brothers and two sisters.

Police Constable Metropolitan
Police Died 22 April 2009,
aged 36
|

| Killed
in a road traffic collision while travelling home from duty in the
evening when a car was in collision with his motorcycle at Perivale,
West London.
A
man, aged 26, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Chris was a motorcyle
traffic officer based at Alperton where he served since June 2005,
having originally joined Thames Valley Police in 2000 from
Berkshire Ambulance Service. He is survived by his
wife, two sons aged 10 and 6 years and a daughter aged 6; his parents,
brother and four sisters.

Gary
Andrew Toms
Police Constable Metropolitan
Police Died 17 April 2009,
aged 37
|
|
| Following a robbery
at a house in Dagenham early on the morning of 11 April,
armed response officers pursued a suspect car into a road in Newham,
East London, and whilst attempting to stop and arrest the escaping
suspects,
PC Toms sustained severe head injuries from which he later died
in hospital.
Three men and
a woman have been arrested and charged with robbery.
Gary was appointed in January 2002
serving in Barking and Dagenham Borough and with the North East
Territorial Support Group for three years before moving in November
2008 to CO19 Firearms Unit based at Leman Street. He is survived
by his wife and his mother and sister.
His
name has been entered on the Roll of Honour at the National Police
Memorial.

Stephen
Paul Carroll
Constable Police
Service of Northern Ireland Died 9 March 2009,
aged 48
|

| During
the late evening officers responded to a call for help from a member
of the public at Craigavon in County Armagh; Constable Carroll and
colleagues were providing backup for officers at the scene when
shots were fired through the rear window of their unmarked car and
he was hit in the head and killed.
The
attack was an ambush carried out by terrorist gunmen. A youth
aged 17 and a man aged 37 have been charged with murder.
Stephen
had 23 years service with the Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross and
the Police Service of Northern Ireland and worked on the Tactical
Support Group. He is survived by
his wife and son, four grandchildren, his parents, three brothers
and sister.
His
name has been entered on the Roll of Honour at the National Police
Memorial.

Laura
Ruth Williams
Police Constable Metropolitan
Police Died 19 February 2009,
aged 41
|
|
| Collapsed
and fell unconscious while on duty at Greenwich Park Police Station,
she was taken to hospital but died in the early hours of the following day, having
suffered a brain haemorrhage.
Laura
joined the Royal Parks Constabulary in September 1998; in 2001 she
was diagnosed with Leukaemia but returned to work after treatment.
After amalgamation into the Metropolitan Police she worked on a
response team and recently as a Safer Parks Officer and had several
commendations for her good work. She is survived by her partner
and two children, boys aged 5 and 2 years; her mother, four brothers
and one sister.

Hampshire Constabulary
Died 22 January 2009,
aged 27
|

Fatally
injured in a road accident while travelling to report for early morning
duty at Alton when his car left the A31 road
and struck a tree near Winchester.
James had
joined the police in November 2003 and was
stationed at Alton Police Station where
he worked on the Targeted Patrol Team. He was
a single man and is survived by his parents and elder brother.

Police Died 21 January 2009,
aged 29
|
|
| Killed
in a road traffic collision whilst travelling home from duty at
Catford late
at night when his motorcycle was in collision with a car at Bromley.
George
was appointed to the police in January 2003 and since 2007 had worked as
a Traffic Officer based at Catford Traffic Garage. He is survived by his wife and
son aged 17 months; his parents, two sisters and brother.

Christine Donald
Detective Constable Strathclyde Police Died 21 January 2009,
aged 40
|
|
| Killed
in a road traffic accident while travelling to report for duty in
the early morning when her car left the carriageway of the M8 motorway
in icy road conditions and struck a tree near Glasgow Airport.
Diane
was appointed in 2001, after service as a prison officer; she became a detective in 2007,
stationed in Glasgow and was seconded to Crime Division Operations
at Govan. She was
a single woman and is survived by her father and brother.
