Lest We Forget
Killed in a road traffic accident, while returning home in the early hours after policing New Year's Eve celebrations in London, when his car was involved in a collision on the southbound A23 near Haywards Heath, Sussex. Tok
had been stationed at Brixton since June 2002, having transferred from Sussex
Police where he had served since March 2000.
On 7 January after a stolen car was abandoned in Bulwell, Nottingham, the officer, a dog handler, gave chase on foot with his dog; he attempted to arrest the suspect as he drove away in another car, the officer was dragged along the road by the car and suffered serious head injuries from which he later died. A 25 year old man was charged with murder but convicted of manslaughter for which he was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment. Ged had 24 years service, he joined the police
cadets as soon as he left school at the age of 16 and was appointed to the force
in 1978; he had been a member of the force dog section since 1987 stationed
at headquarters at Sherwood Lodge. In 1990 he received a judge's commendation
for saving the life of a potential suicide. In 2005 his name was entered
on the National Police Memorial Roll of Honour in London
While engaged with other officers in an anti-terrorist operation at premises in North Manchester, one of three suspects who had been detained at the premises suddenly broke free and attacked the officers with a large knife, injuring several of them; in assisting his colleagues Constable Oake was stabbed in the chest and fatally wounded and died soon afterwards. His attacker was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Posthumously awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal in January 2009 Stephen had been with the Force for 20
years and since 1999 had been a member of the Special Branch. In 2002 he was
commended for his professional skills and expertise. In 2005 his name was entered
on the National Police Memorial Roll of Honour in London
The officer was at the rear of his marked police car on the hard shoulder of the A1 motorway near Alconbury, preparing to protect the scene of a vehicle collision, when a passing car spun out of control in the icy road conditions and struck the officer, causing multiple injuries from which he died at the scene. Andy had over 14 years police
service having joined the force in 1993 on transfer from the Metropolitan Police,
where he had served for 5 years. Since November 1999 he had served as a traffic
patrol officer based at Bottisham and St. Neots. In 2005 his name was entered on the National Police Memorial Roll of Honour in London.
While cycling home from duty at Weymouth he was in collision with a car, which had turned across his path, and he sustained serious injuries from which he died in hospital a few hours later. Robin had joined the force in 1975 and had
served on Uniform Patrol, Traffic Patrol, Home Beat and Road Safety; since 1992
he had been a Scenes of Crime Examiner based at Divisional Headquarters in Weymouth.
He had been Commended three times for good police work.
Killed in a road traffic accident, while returning from a C.I.D. training course at Hendon police college, when his car was struck from behind by a heavy goods vehicle as he waited in stationary traffic on the M25 motorway near Thurrock. Christopher
had completed seven years police service and was stationed at Ilford Police
Station, where he worked on the Burglary and Robbery Squad of the Criminal Investigation Department.
Died from injuries received in a road traffic accident on 23 July when his car was in collision with a van while returning from a multi agency emergency planning meeting at Humberside Airport. Bob was survived by his wife and two sons aged 16 and 12 years.
After responding to a burglar alarm at a college in Cardiff city centre in the early evening, he had left his vehicle and was pursuing a suspect on foot across a busy main road, when he was accidentally struck by a passing car, sustaining multiple injuries from which he died in hospital a few hours later. Andrew had been appointed to the force
in August 2000, since when he had worked in the Cardiff area. He was stationed
at Cardiff Central Police Station, where he was known as an enthusiastic and dedicated officer,
who was well liked and respected by those he worked with. In 2005 his name was entered on the National Police Memorial Roll of Honour in London.
Fatally injured in a road accident when he fell from his police motorcyle on the Chain Bar roundabout at junction 26 of the M62 motorway near Cleckheaton. Andy had joined the force in 1979 serving in
Chapeltown and Killingbeck Divisions; much of his service was in the Traffic
Department and he had been a member of the Force Motorcycle Unit since October
2001.
Died in hospital from severe injuries received in a road accident, in the early hours of 5th September, when the police patrol car he was driving left the road and crashed into a fence on the A47 at Scarning near Dereham. Bernie had joined the force as a Police Cadet
at the age of 16 and for the last 15 years had served as a local beat officer
in Swaffham.
Fatally injured in a road traffic accident, when his motorcycle was in collision with a car and a bus, while on duty in Edinburgh where he was seconded to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service to develop diversity training. Alasdair joined the force in 1982, serving
at Dunfermline, Dalgety Bay and Force HQ before his secondment in January 2003.
Born in Malaysia he specialised in diversity issues and was the first Chairman
of the new SEMPERscotland support network.
While travelling home from C.I.D. duties at Banbury late at night, he was killed when his vehicle left the road and collided with a tree near Deddington. Bob joined the force in 1985 and was commended
for bravery while on uniform duties. He had served with Special Branch and on
secondment to Bosnia after which he helped raise money for a child severely
injured in the war there.
While on duty following a League football match, he was working with another dog handler, engaged in dispersing large crowds of rival football fans in Barnsley Town Centre, when he collapsed and died. Tommy had 27 years service with South Yorkshire
Police and was attached to the Operational Support Services department as a
dog handler working from Ecclesfield Police Station.
The officer and a colleague were on patrol in Leeds when they checked a man in a car, which was found to be stolen and on false number plates. As they and a third officer attempted to arrest the suspect, he suddenly produced a handgun and fired several shots, hitting all three officers; his colleague was severely wounded and Constable Broadhurst was shot in the body and head and killed. His attacker was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Ian had completed 5 years service having joined
the force in 1998. Since March 2003 he had served as a Traffic Officer
and was a member of the Killingbeck Road Traffic Department. In 2008 a memorial stone was erected at the scene by the Police Memorial Trust. Lest We Forget |
