Eric Charles Renshaw

Died 15 May 1978, aged 45

PC Renshaw was killed together with four colleagues, PC Bulleyment, WPS Burton, PC Ross and WPC Sullivan, in a road traffic accident when the coach, taking them to the Police Federation Conference at Blackpool, suffered brake failure, crashed into a roundabout and overturned near Wakefield.       

The coach was found to have defective brakes, the coach owners were fined for failing to maintain the brakes and the driver received an absolute discharge.

Eric joined the police force in 1953 and worked with the Keighley Road Traffic Department, he had been commended 3 times for good work and courage.
He was survived by his wife and three children.

This was the highest loss of life to police officers in a single road accident.
