Died 15 May 1978, aged 40

WPS Burton was killed together with four colleagues, PC Bulleyment, PC Renshaw, PC Ross and WPC Sullivan, in a road traffic accident when the coach, taking them to the Police Federation Conference at Blackpool, suffered brake failure, crashed into a roundabout and overturned near Wakefield.

The coach was found to have defective brakes, the coach owners were fined for failing to maintain the brakes and the driver received an absolute discharge.

Elizabeth joined the police force in 1958, she was promoted in 1969
and was stationed at Gibton with the Juvenile Liaison Department.
She was a single woman.

This was the highest loss of life to police officers in a single road accident.
