Died 8 October 1951, aged 38

Sergeant Wesnedge was killed in a road collision while cycling home from duty late at night, after giving an accident prevention lecture in Hunslet, when his auto-cycle was struck by a lorry, the driver of which was drunk and which
failed to stop at the scene.

The lorry driver was convicted of manslaughter by reckless driving whilst
drunk and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment and disqualified for 5 years.

Richard had served about 15 years and received the Defence Medal for police service during the War. He had been a recruit instructor in the Police Training Department before being promoted to the Meadow Lane Division and
was well known as an accident prevention lecturer.

He was survived by his wife, daughter aged 10 and son aged 6 years.
