Robert George Ling

Died 7 October 2002, aged 27

While in South Africa with other officers extraditing two murder suspects, en route to Johannesburg Airport in a two vehicle convoy, they were travelling at high speed in the emergency lane in heavy rain when his driver lost control of their unmarked police car
which overturned and he sustained fatal injuries.

On 7 October 2005 the South African Police driver was convicted
of culpable homicide and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment suspended for 5 years and banned from driving.

Robert had served for six years at Sutton Coldfield Police Station,
where he worked in the Criminal Investigation Department.
He was survived by his parents and was their only child.

A simple cross was placed at the scene, a memorial stone was erected at
Sutton Coldfield Police Station where a room was named in his memory,
and plaques placed at the National Memorial Arboretum.

Our Beloved Son
Robert George Ling

The most precious moment in our life,
And the greatest joy we've ever known.

Was having such a special son,
Who we could call our own.

Each day we think about you,
You're there, in every happy thought.

Every moment shared was special,
Though your time with us was short.

The saddest part of leaving,
Was not the tears we cried.

But knowing that you died alone,
Without us by your side.

Not having the last few moments,
To hold you in our arms.

To tell you that we love you,
and to say our last goodbye.

Love you always Robert,
Till the day we die.
