George Linnel

 

Parish Constable

Pattishall, Northamptonshire

Died 23 July 1788

 

While attempting to execute an arrest warrant for assault on a man at his home, the man's son threatened the Constable with a gun, but he persisted and on approaching the door to force entry he was shot dead.

 


 

James Kemp

 

Detective Officer

Northampton Borough Police

Died 29 December 1868, aged 31

 

While on his way home after duty late at night on 26 December, he was asked to help deal with a man armed with a shotgun at a disturbance in Campbell Square, Northampton. Despite the man threatening to shoot him he approached and was shot in the neck and shoulder and died three days later.

 

An inscribed headstone was erected on his grave at Billing Road Cemetery and later a memorial plaque was placed at County Police Headquarters.

Died 18 October 1877

 

Killed, together with two other officers who were fatally injured, in a railway collision at Billing between a ballast train and the passenger train on which they were returning from the Quarter Sessions at Northampton.

Died 19 October 1877

 

Fatally injured on 18 October, together with two other officers, in a railway collision at Billing between a ballast train and the passenger train on which they were returning from the Quarter Sessions at Northampton.

Died 14 November 1877, aged 35

 

Fatally injured on 18 October, together with two other officers, in a railway collision at Billing between a ballast train and the passenger train on which they were returning from the Quarter Sessions at Northampton.

 


 

David Davis

Died 25 August 1878, aged 27

 

Whilst attempting to arrest a vagrant in the early hours of 15 May at Kettering, a violent struggle ensued and while he was face down on the ground he was struck twice on the back of the head with own truncheon; he failed to recover from his injuries and subsequently died from disease.

 


 

Herbert John Lee

Died 28 March 1920

 

Fatally injured  in the early hours, when he was struck by a passing train on the Great Central Railway at Woodford Halse, where he had been patrolling the goods yard with his dog during a stormy night.

 


 

Reginald Mann

 

Police Constable

Northamptonshire Constabulary

Died October 1931

 

Killed in a road accident at Rushden while checking road fund licences, when he stepped into the road to stop a car and was hit from behind by a heavy lorry, he died instantly from multiple injuries.

 


 

Dennis Richard Brown

 

Police Constable

Northampton Borough Police

Died 28 May 1962, aged 33

 

Fatally injured whilst on bicycle patrol in the early hours when he was run down by a motor car which failed to stop at Wellingborough Road, Northampton.

 

A memorial plaque was later erected at County Police Headquarters.

 


 

Michael John Plaice

 

Police Constable

Northampton and County Constabulary

Died 28 August 1969, aged 30

 

Killed whilst checking a lorry parked on the hard shoulder of the M1 Motorway near Watford Gap in the early hours, when it was struck by a cattle transporter.

 

A memorial plaque was later erected at County Police Headquarters.

 


 

Roger Edward Flawn

Died 29 February 1976, aged 18

 

Fatally injured when his vehicle was in collision with a tree while travelling from the police hostel to report for early turn duty in Northampton.

 


 

Hubert Henry Ward

Northamptonshire Police

Died 6 January 1977, aged 56

 

Fatally injured in a road accident when his car went out of control, left the road and overturned at Kettering.

 


 

John Frederick William Beckett

 

Police Sergeant

Northamptonshire Police

Died 8 January 1985, aged 48

 

Received head injuries in October 1976 when he was assaulted during the course of an arrest as a result of which he developed a brain tumour, was medically pensioned in March 1979 and subsequently died.

 


 

Simon Lilley

 

Acting Police Sergeant

Northamptonshire Police

Died 5 November 1991, aged 30

 

Fatally injured whilst assisting with a traffic census on the A5 near Weedon in the early evening, when he stood in the centre of the road and signalled a motorcyclist to stop he was struck by the machine, the rider of which was was under the influence of drink and was speeding.

 

A memorial plaque was erected at County Police Headquarters.
