Lest We Forget PC Arthur William Reynolds Died 2 August 1946, aged 41 Fatally injured when struck by a US Navy jeep, while on bicycle patrol. SDI Oscar Thomas Thompson Died 9 July 1947, aged 53 Killed in a car accident in Germany with the Allied Control Commission. PC Leslie Edwin Thompson, 39 PC Gilbert Edward Perkins, 40 Died 26 December 1947 Driver and operator in a wireless car, which crashed on an urgent call. PC Arthur Edward Quemby Died 9 January 1948, aged 39 Killed performing motorcycle beat duty when he skidded on icy roads. PC Patrick George Fitzgerald Died 29 January 1948, aged 33 Fatally injured in an accident when he crashed on motorcycle patrol. PC Nathanael Edgar Died 13 February 1948, aged 33 Shot and fatally wounded by a suspect he was questioning. PC Albert Goodsall KPM Died 8 September 1948, aged 59 Death hastened by excessive hours of work as Federation Secretary. D/Sgt Peter Scanlan Died 2 February 1949, aged 47 Died of disease as a result of injury received in the execution of duty. PC John Henry Andrews Died 16 February 1949, aged 32 Fatally injured when his motorcycle struck a lorry while riding to duty. PC Albert Victor Hawkins Died 22 November 1949, aged 48 Fatally injured while cycling to duty at court when he crashed in a fog. PC Harry Harding Died 2 December 1949, aged 38 Fatally injured when his police motorcycle collided with a car. Sgt Thomas Armstrong McFadzean Died 10 February 1950, aged 42 Fatally injured in an accidental fall on the pavement while on patrol. PC George Ronald Cooper Died 21 March 1950, aged 43 Killed in a collision with a lorry whilst on motorcycle traffic patrol. PC Robert Gilchrist Broadhead Martin Died 23 March 1950, aged 47 Fatally injured in a crash on a wet road on motorcycle traffic patrol. PC Samuel Arthur Lock Died 4 November 1950, aged 52 Accidentally shot dead cleaning a police pistol used on bank escorts. SPS Francis Henry Clark Died 10 February 1952, aged 39 SPS Thomas Davidson Speedy Died 11 February 1952, aged 41 Killed in a coach accident returning from Hendon to the Police College. Sgt Frederick Henry Keil Died 9 June 1952, aged 31 Died from a brain tumour believed to be the result of injury on duty. PC Sidney George Miles Died 2 November 1952, aged 42 Shot dead assisting colleagues who were fired on by armed suspects. Posthumously awarded the King's Police Medal for Gallantry. Sgt John Alexander Penfold Died 21 November 1952, aged 40 Collapsed and died of heart failure resulting from injuries on duty. PC Ronald Victor Saunders Died 25 December 1952, aged 28 Fatally injured when his autocycle was in collision with a lorry. D/Sgt Harold John Whatley Died 23 February 1953, aged 39 Fatally injured in a car accident at Cranford whilst travelling to duty. Sgt Charles William Bacon Died 20 April 1953 When reporting for duty he collapsed in a police station and died soon after. PC Roy Edgar Dellow Died 2 April 1954 Killed in a motorcycle accident returning home after night duty. PC Percy James Claxton Died 17 July 1954, aged 39 Fatally injured in an gas explosion investigating a suspected suicide. PC David John Barrett Died 2 November 1954, aged 29 Killed in a collision with a lorry while on an advanced motorcycle course. PC John Fitzgerald Died 3 May 1955, aged 43 Killed in a road accident on his way home soon after he came off duty. T/Sgt Reginald William Tipple Died 21 June 1956, aged 32 Shot dead by terrorists seconded to the UK Police Unit in Cyprus. T/Sgt Leonard Alfred Demmon Died 31 August 1956, aged 24 Shot dead by terrorists seconded to the UK Police Unit in Cyprus. Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry. T/Sgt Maurice 'Tony' Eden GM Died 17 December 1956, aged 25 Accidentally shot by his revolver with the UK Police Unit in Cyprus. PC John Laurenson Baker Died 15 June 1957, aged 22 Killed when his motorcycle collided with a lorry, while travelling to duty. Supt Cornelius Carson Died 26 October 1957, aged 51 Collapsed and died going to the assistance of a child after a fire. PC Royston William Hird Died 20 March 1958, aged 32 Fatally injured when his traffic car crashed while on patrol. PC Edgar Gerald Allen Died 29 March 1958, aged 41 Killed when his motorcycle crashed while pursuing a speeding car. Supt Thomas George James Died 18 July 1958, aged 54 Collapsed and died in the police car taking him to duty at Waltham Green. PC Royston Ernest Adams Died 11 December 1958, aged 24 Fatally injured when his motorcycle skidded and crashed on patrol. PC Raymond Henry Summers Died 14 December 1958, aged 23 Stabbed in the back and killed when intervening in a street affray. D/Sgt Raymond William Purdy Died 13 July 1959, aged 43 Shot dead while detaining a wanted man he had chased and arrested. PC George Edward Albert Gale Died 19 November 1959, aged 49 Taken ill while on Federation duty and died a few hours later. PC Melvin Davies Died 8 December 1959, aged 31 Fatally injured in a collision with a car while on motorcycle patrol. PC Edward Roy Dorney Died 1 January 1960, aged 34 Killed with his police dog when hit by a train while tracking suspects. PC Ronald Alan Addison Died 24 January 1960, aged 24 Collapsed and died of heart failure while chasing two suspects. PC Harold William Hauxwell Died 7 February 1960, aged 24 Fatally injured in a motorcycle accident travelling home from duty. PC Leslie Edwin Vincent Meehan Died 2 March 1960, aged 33 Killed when a car he had stopped drove away dragging him along. PC Terence Daniel Furnell Died 13 October 1960, aged 25 Fatally injured in a patrol car, which crashed on an emergency call. PC James Frederick John Scott Flett GM Died 30 September 1962, aged 52 Killed in a car crash travelling home after night duty. PC Brian Bernard Joseph Holden Died 20 August 1963, aged 26 Fatally injured when struck by a car while on motorcycle patrol at night. PC David Alyn Jones Died 28 July 1964, aged 37 Killed in a road accident undergoing a lightweight motorcycle course. PC George Ernest White Died 7 October 1964, aged 34 Killed in a patrol car, which crashed on an urgent hospital escort. D/Supt Ben Brynmor Devonald Died 17 June 1965, aged 50 Collapsed and died in his office at Greenwich police station. D/Sgt Ian Anthony Herbert Died 19 August 1965, aged 31 Killed in a road accident whilst travelling home after duty. PC Eric McLaughlan Died 15 October 1965, aged 35 Killed when his moped was in a collision while travelling to work. PC Dennis Edward Cowell Died 21 November 1965, aged 41 Drowned when his police launch capsized while towing another boat. PC Thomas George Alfred Jackson Died 6 February 1966, aged 43 Died of heart failure aggravated by extended duties on prisoner escort. PC Michael John Davies Died 19 August 1969, aged 23 Fatally stabbed while off duty after identifying himself to warn a man. PC David John Prior Died 5 November 1969, aged 26 Fatally injured in a scooter crash returning to a split tour of duty. PC Ronald Reginald Pell Died 26 December 1969, aged 39 Fatally injured while observer in a patrol car in a road traffic collision. PC Christopher Billson Died 2 January 1970, aged 24 Fatally injured in a car accident while travelling to early turn duty. Sgt David James Hems Died 5 May 1970, aged 30 Fatally injured in a motorcycling accident while travelling to duty. PC Douglas Frederick Beckerson Died 10 April 1971, aged 22 Killed in a fall through a glass roof trying to arrest a violent suspect. TDC Alan Choules Died 25 April 1971, aged 29 Drowned off duty saving the life of a boy following a boat capsize. PC Robert Stanley Beazer Died 27 April 1971, aged 21 Killed when his patrol car crashed responding to an emergency call. PC George William Higgs, 38 PC William Randall, 36 Died 5 January 1972 Fatally injured when their traffic car crashed on an urgent hospital call. PC Douglas John Price Died 18 August 1972, aged 45 Fatally injured while training for a police motorcycle display. DC David Eric Dench Died 29 December 1972, aged 27 Killed while on enquiries when his car was struck by a drunk driver. PC George Edward Sweeting Died 2 January 1973, aged 35 Killed in a police motorcycle convoy when a van turned across his path. PC Michael Anthony Whiting Died 5 May 1973, aged 21 Killed when dragged by a vehicle while trying to arrest the driver. Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry. Sgt Stewart Will Died 26 July 1973, aged 38 Drowned attempting to rescue a girl from the sea while on holiday. Insp David George Gisborne Died 5 August 1974, aged 36 Collapsed and died after an earlier assault and riot in Red Lion Square. TDC Vernon Rupert Frederick Weatherston Died 6 September 1974, aged 52 Suffered heart failure before his CID car was involved in a collision. PC Stephen Andrew Tibble Died 26 February 1975, aged 21 Fatally shot off duty trying to arrest an armed suspect chased by police. Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry. Exp/O Roger Philip Goad BEM Died 29 August 1975, aged 40 Killed attempting to defuse a terrorist bomb when it exploded. Posthumously awarded the George Cross for Gallantry. DC John William Fordham Died 26 January 1985, aged 45 Fatally stabbed when attacked whilst on surveillance duty in Kent. PC Keith Henry Blakelock Died 6 October 1985, aged 40 Beaten and stabbed to death by a mob during large scale rioting at Tottenham. Posthumously awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal. PC Wayne Darrell Spooner Died 15 June 1986, aged 28 Fatally injured in a motorcycle accident while reporting for duty. PC Martin Bickersteth Bell Died 3 July 1986, aged 27 Killed when his car was struck by a drunk driver pursued by police. PC Philip Michael Olds QGM Died 1 October 1986, aged 34 Shot and paralysed attempting an arrest in 1980, leading to his death. Awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal in 1982. PC Ronan Konrad Aidan McCloskey Died 9 May 1987, aged 25 Killed by a suspected drunk driver who drove off with him clinging to the car. |
