Died 10 November 1967, aged 24

 

After leaving his police vehicle to remove an iron bar causing an obstruction inside the Mersey Tunnel at Liverpool, a lorry and trailer with defective brakes and tyres failed to stop and he was struck and killed.

 

The lorry driver was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving, fined and disqualified from driving.

 

Derek is the only member of the force known to have lost his life on duty.
