Died 28 December 1852

 

Killed together, along with 27 other men, while they were attempting to salvage the shipwreck of the Brig "Lily"on the rocks at Kitterland in the Sound Channel, when its cargo of gunpowder exploded.

 

A Memorial to all the dead was placed in Rushen Church.

 

John Craige joined the Force in 1848 and John Wright in 1849.

Gordon Black

 

Police Constable

Isle of Man Constabulary

Died 5 January 1966, aged 38

 

While on motorcycle patrol during the early evening, in heavy rain and poor visibility, he collided with a pedal cyclist near Laxey and was thrown from his machine and fatally injured.

 

Gordon was buried in Onchan Churchyard.

He had completed over 16 years service in the force.

He was survived by his wife and four children aged 13 years down to 21 months.

Denis Alfred Hamer

 

Police Constable

Isle of Man Constabulary

Died 7 September 1976, aged 26

 

Received fatal head injuries while on crowd control during the Junior Manx Grand Prix Race, when he was struck by a motorcycle, which ran out of control after a rider crashed on the TT course at Union Mills.

 

Denis had almost 7 years police service having joined the Lancashire Constabulary in October 1969 and transferring in June 1975.

He was survived by his wife.
