William Gibson

Police Sergeant

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary

 

Died  22 May 1951, aged 44

 Following reports of an armed man roaming the Dumfries streets in the early hours, the sergeant, in a car with two colleagues, made a search of the area;
as he drew up alongside a man loitering on a corner, the suspect produced
a shotgun and, without warning, shot him in the head and killed him.

 

Posthumously awarded the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct

 

William Gibson was stationed at Dumfries Police Station; he had joined
Dumfries Burgh Police in 1928, continuing to serve with the Dumfries-shire
County Police in 1936, before amalgamation into the present force in 1948.

He was survived by his wife, a son aged 18 and daughter aged 12 years.
 



John Rutherford Watson

Inspector

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary

 

Died 13 February 1967, aged 50
 

While on supervisory patrol and enquiries in the village of
Thornhill he collapsed and died from a heart attack.

 John was a married man and a native of Cumberland. He had 29 years police service
having joined the former Dumfries-shire Constabulary in 1938 and at the time
of his death was Sub Divisional Officer at Sanquhar, Dumfries-shire.



Michael Hall

Police Cadet, aged 16 yrs

 

Isabella Janet Harris

Woman Police Constable, aged 27 yrs

 

Gerard Vincent Hogg

Police Constable, aged 28 yrs

 

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary

 

Died  7 November 1978

 

All three officers were killed, together with a Department of Transport
Traffic Examiner, when their traffic patrol car was struck by an articulated
lorry and thrown into the path of a concrete mixer lorry on the
opposite carriageway of the A74 near Johnstonebridge.

 

Michael was a native of Sunderland, he had joined the Cadet force in August 1978
and was stationed at Dumfries. At the time of his death he was on training
experience with the Traffic Department.

 

Isabella was originally from Belfast, she had been a teacher in Northern Ireland before joining the force in March 1975. She was based at Dumfries on the Traffic Department, she and a colleague having been the first female Traffic officers in the Constabulary.

 

Gerard was born in Wigtown; he had nearly six years service with the force
and was a Traffic Department officer based at Lockerbie since 1977.

He was survived by his wife and 13 month old daughter.

 



Kenneth Andrew Brodie

 

Police Constable

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary

 

Died  8 January 1997, aged 34

 

Killed in a road traffic accident when his police patrol car was involved in a three-car collision, in which a married couple were also killed, while on
mobile patrol on the A76 near Mennock, Dumfries-shire.

 

Kenny had completed four years service  with the Constabulary having
been appointed in September 1992 and was stationed at Sanquhar.

He was survived by his wife, a daughter aged 2 years 11 months and a son age 19 months.
