While in attendance at the scene of a road traffic accident at Chesterfield he collapsed and later died at hospital from heart failure.

Steven was appointed to the force in September 1974 and had served on the Alfreton, Road Traffic, Buxton, Operational Support and Chesterfield Divisions.
