Died 23 July 1977, aged 32

 Died from injuries received on 7 December 1976, when PCs Mickleburgh and Rowland were killed, after the police driving school car, in which he was a passenger, was in collision with a heavy goods lorry on the A52 Leek to Ashbourne Road, near Swinscoe.

Melvyn was appointed to the force in 1964, he was promoted sergeant in 1973 and was a traffic officer attached to the Headquarters Training Department.

He was survived by his wife and two sons.
