Died 12 September 1912, aged 42

Died from a fractured skull sustained in the early hours of 11 September, while he was on his rounds, when he was thrown from his bicycle after accidentally colliding with one of his constables in the darkness at Castle Gresley.

An inquest jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

        John had 21 years service having been appointed in September 1891, he had been promoted to sergeant in 1902 and was stationed at Castle Gresley.

He was survived by his wife and son aged 19 years.
