Died 24 January 1885, aged 39

Died as a result of injuries received on January 21st 1885, while returning from Chesterfield with his Superintendent and a prisoner; he was riding the prisoner's horse near Baslow when it stumbled and the stirrups broke and he was thrown to the ground sustaining fatal head injuries. 

An inquest jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

James had joined the force in May 1872; he was promoted sergeant in 1878 and was stationed at Stoney Middleton.

He was survived by his wife and four little girls.
