William Taylor

Parish Constable

Died 28 May 1828, aged 51

Whilst placing two prisoners, arrested during the evening for being drunk and disorderly in a public house, into the Round House at Melbourne, he was dragged inside and beaten about the head, receiving severe injuries from which he died the following morning.

Two men, aged 30 and 24, were acquitted of a murder charge after admitting manslaughter, for which they were sentenced to transportation for life.

William was a married man and left behind a large family.

He was buried in the Baptist Chapel graveyard, Chapel Street,
where his gravestone still stands.
