Constable Newbery
and a colleague attended the scene of multiple vehicle
road
traffic accident during the early morning in icy road conditions
on the A1 Motorway near Alconbury; he was at the rear of their marked
police car on the
hard shoulder, retrieving a warning sign to
protect the accident scene, when a passing car spun out of control
in the icy conditions and struck the officer,
causing multiple
injuries from which he died instantly at the scene.
An inquest jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
Andy
had joined the force in August 1993 on transfer from the Metropolitan
Police, where he had served for 5 years. Since November 1999 he
had
served as a traffic patrol officer based at Bottisham and
St. Neotts.
Andy was survived by his parents and his partner,
a serving officer, with whom he lived.
