DEDICATED TO

 JACK William RAE
who was born 28 March 1994
and died suddenly 17 February 2006
whilst playing out near his home

Son of Police Sergeant Anthony Rae, founder of the Trust

Jack was survived by his parents, Ruth and Anthony,
his brothers and sisters, David 24, Charlotte 16, Megan 15, Mary 9, Adam 7,
grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

The following tributes were written for Jack's memorial and funeral services
by his mum and dad and his family.

Jack was a special boy, strong and brave but kind and gentle, painfully shy and yet so adventurous. Jack loved playing out, with his friends or by himself; he loved the woods, building dens and climbing trees; he loved swimming, whittling wood and making bows and arrows; his pets were a hamster and a stick insect.

Jack struggled at high school but he tried hard, he said he “couldn’t do maths” but in 4 months he got 4 Merit notes from school, 3 for maths. Two weeks after he died we received a gold merit note and a class winner certificate for a geography project he completed in his last week at school.

Jack had been happy at his primary school, he knew there were plans for an adventure playground there and hoped it would be built before he left but there was never any money for this. An independent fund has now been opened to build the playground in memory of Jack, it will be made of wood and ropes, Jack’s favourite things and many children will play there for many years and Jack will watch over them with a big smile on his face.

We all have our memories of Jack. I know they will all be happy ones because that was what Jack was. Sometimes he was a tease and I know he didn't always do as he was told straight away but all who knew him would say he was a really nice young boy. Give Jack a shoebox, string, bits of wood, selloptape, not forgetting elastic bands and he would build something. He just liked making things. He didn't like doing his homework very much as it took time away from being in the woods, climbing trees and playing with his friends. When he smiled his big lovely smile, his dimples would show, his face light up and you had to smile back because you couldn't help it. He just made you feel happy. He had a kind and gentle spirit. To those of us who loved him he was very special. Jack - a precious son and brother, a beloved grandson, nephew and friend - we love you, we miss you, we always will.
So Jack - Night, Night, God Bless.

Jack is a star who has not gone very far
Jack is my brother who I could cover
Jack is eleven I say he's in heaven
Jack has a tree that everyone can see
Jack loved Lord of the Rings
not Klingons and things
Jack has a bow as long as head to toe
Jack is a hero of that I know
Jack has a smile that stretched as far as a mile
Jack had a glow of where I could go
Jack's life story is so full of glory.

 Although I'm not here
I am still with you
Although I can't touch
I still wrap my arms around you
Although I can't speak
I still tell you I love you
Although I can't hear
I still listen to your prayers
Although I'm not with you
I am still here.

 You've gone!
You left this world but
entered a completely new one.
Don't be scared,
I'll be with you soon,
but until that day,
we'll meet in our dreams,
and laugh, and play
like we used to,
we'll be together soon...
I love you.

Jacks Box
I will but in the box
The sound of Jacks voice,
The sound of him playing in the trees.
I will put in the box
The smell of the trees,
And the wet leaves in the woods that he loved.
I will put in the box
The taste of the pizza that he made
When out with his school friends and his teacher.
I will put in the box
The coldness of him everywhere,
When he’s fallen asleep and will not wake up,
The itchy blanket wrapped around him.
I will put in the box
Me,
My tears rolling down my face,
For happy and sad reasons.

The day after Jack died his friends went to play in the woods near his house as usual, when they came out they left behind a small memorial garden. A year on it remains, plants sown have grown and there has never been a day without flowers left there.

Jack is not lost, we know where he is - Jack is playing out and always will be.

It was discovered that Jack had a fatal heart condition, he could have lived a long life without ever knowing it or died any day; there is no reason Jack died that day, it was just his time. But while there was no reason for Jack's death there was a purpose to his life, he made many people happy and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Jack's short life and tragic death influenced and affected many people, 250 attended his memorial service and a staggering £25,000 was donated to his fund enabling us not only to build his playground but to help other projects for children.

A year after Jack died the
"Jack Rae Adventure Playground"
was opened at his former Primary School.
